If you want the rich, mottled appearance of acid-stained concrete without dealing with harsh chemicals, NewLook Translucent Enhancer Colors are a simple and safe alternative. This guide walks you through how to use an HVLP sprayer to create a faux acid stain effect on an interior concrete floor.

Why Use NewLook Enhancers Instead of Acid Stain?

NewLook Enhancers offer the same natural, variegated look as acid stain—but without the hazards.

  • No acids, acetone, or neutralizing steps

  • No special safety gear or ventilation needed

  • Easier color control

  • Fast application

  • Over 80 available colors, offering far more variety than traditional acids

For this project, the colors used were Terracotta and Light Oak, each boosted with four additive bottles for stronger color. These were applied over a Solid Color base coat (Beach House).

Step 1: Prepare Your Sprayer

You’ll need an HVLP (High Volume Low Pressure) sprayer set to:

  • 20 PSI

  • Fine mist setting

The low pressure keeps overspray and fogging to a minimum, helping you lay down soft, natural-looking color without harsh edges.

Step 2: Start Spraying Your First Color

Spray one color at a time.

  • Apply light, even passes.

  • Keep the sprayer moving to avoid streaks.

  • Aim for a soft, mottled look rather than heavy coverage.

Fewer coats create a lighter effect, while more coats build a deeper, richer tone.

Tip: Enhancers dry darker than they look when wet. Go light, let it dry, then decide if you need more color.

Step 3: Add Additional Coats as Needed

Apply each coat patiently.

  • Avoid trying to get full color in one pass.

  • Allow 15–20 minutes for each coat to dry enough to walk on (wear socks, booties, or spikes).

  • Continue layering until you achieve the look you want.

Creating a sample board before starting the project is a smart way to test color combinations and spraying techniques.

Step 4: Let the Final Coat Dry

Once your last coat is applied, let it dry for at least one hour before sealing.

Step 5: Seal the Surface

NewLook recommends using:

  • NewLook Clear 32, or

  • Any preferred interior sealer

If you choose a non–NewLook sealer, wait 24 hours before applying it.

Sealing protects the finish, enhances the color, and makes ongoing maintenance easier.

This HVLP spraying method gives you a controlled, non-toxic way to create a beautiful faux acid stain look on interior concrete. For product support or to locate a dealer, contact NewLook International.
