Staining concrete is one of the easiest ways to give old or plain surfaces a clean, updated look. NewLook’s Endura Solid Stain makes the process straightforward, even if you’ve never worked with concrete stain before. The key is proper prep, the right tools, and following each step in order. This guide walks you through everything you need — from getting the surface ready to applying the stain and finishing the job so it lasts.
Applying endura solid stains is simple and easy to do. Here’s what you’ll need before getting started.
What you need before starting
-
NewLook Endura Solid Stain (single-component stain)
-
Concrete surface that is clean and dry
-
Basic cleaning supplies (broom or pressure washer, degreaser if needed)
-
Paint roller or brush (or whatever applicator the stain manufacturer recommends)
-
Protective gear (gloves, maybe mask if ventilation is poor)

Here’s some tips before getting started:
Tip 1: Clean the concrete thoroughly
Make sure that you have properly prepped and cleaned your concrete before starting.
Tip 2: Test the color in a small area to make sure it looks the way you want it to.
Tip 3: If you’re working on an exterior, make sure the temperature and concrete outside is between 50F - 90F.
Step-by-step staining process
Step 1: Start by masking off the wall surrounding the area.

Step 2: Shake the can of endura stains and pour the entire container into your bucket. Mix the stain well, the pigments can settle in the bottom of the can. We recommend using a drill and paddle or a drill and squirrel mixer to really get the stain mix.

Step 3: Assemble your applicator brush and pole, then dip the end of the bristles of your applicator brush into the bucket with the stain. Start staining in a corner and work your way out. Use the lines in the concrete as stages to apply the stain, use a figure-eight pattern to apply the stain, use light pressure when staining, and let the brush do the work. It doesn’t take much more force. Also, don’t worry if your first coat is a bit streaky.

Pro Tip: If there is a brushed pattern in the concrete, work with the grain not against it.

Step 4: Make sure the first coat is completely dry. To test it, take a wet rag and rub a small area. If there’s no stain on the rag, then you are ready to apply a second coat.

Finishing: To finish apply a second coat and wait for approximately 24 hours before sealing or walking on the surface.

Tips & Best Practices
-
If the floor previously had paint or heavy coatings — strip them off first for better stain penetration.
-
Work in manageable sections; don’t try to cover a large floor all at once.
-
Apply stain in good weather or a well-ventilated area — ideal is dry, mild conditions.
-
Use proper protective gear (gloves, maybe mask) — stains can irritate skin or respiratory system if inhaled.
-
Always follow manufacturer’s stain instructions (dry time, re-coat interval, etc.).
