Preparing your concrete the right way is the foundation of a clean, long-lasting stain application. NewLook’s Endura Solid Stain works best when the surface is free of dirt, oil, sealers, and other coatings. The goal is simple: open the pores of the concrete so the stain can bond properly. We'll walk you through everything you need to do before you start applying the product.
Why Proper Prep Matters
Concrete surfaces vary. Some are lightly textured, while others are hard-troweled or even glazed. If the surface is too smooth — or if cars will be driving and parking on it — the concrete may need additional profiling to ensure strong adhesion. Profiling creates the right texture for the stain to grip. If you’re unsure whether your concrete needs this, contact NewLook for guidance before moving forward.
Step 1: Start With a Deep Clean
A clean surface is essential. Begin by removing dirt, debris, and any surface contaminants. When dealing with oil stains, NewLook’s Concentrated Industrial Cleaner is a good choice. Apply the diluted cleaner directly onto the stain and let it sit long enough to emulsify the oil. This step helps loosen residue that normal washing won’t remove.
Once the cleaner has done its job, you’re ready to pressure wash.
Step 2: Pressure Wash the Right Way
Hold the pressure-washing wand as straight up and down as possible. Keep a consistent distance from the concrete and clean in slow, even rows, similar to spray-painting. Avoid pressing down directly on the surface, since that can damage or streak the concrete.
For heavy oil stains or stubborn spots, move more slowly. If water still beads up on the oil after washing, repeat the process. Some stains may require two or three cleaning cycles.
For best results, use:
-
A pressure washer with at least 3,000 PSI
-
A 15–25 degree fan tip
If the concrete has old sealer or paint, a heated pressure-washing system may be necessary to break down those coatings.
Step 3: Inspect the Surface
After pressure washing, check the concrete. Make sure all oil, residue, and contaminants are gone. If the surface is clean and damp — but not holding standing water — you can move on to mixing your product.
Always review the instruction sheet included in your kit for additional guidelines. Following the prep steps correctly ensures the stain bonds well and gives you the best, longest-lasting results.
